The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals, Mrs Viola Chan, commended the academic achievements of 46 inmates at Pik Uk Correctional Institution (PUCI) and presented them with certificates in a ceremony at the institution today (December 5).

At the ceremony Mrs Chan said that she fully supported the Correctional Services Department's (CSD) diversified rehabilitation work. The department has been appealing to the community to accept rehabilitated persons and encourage charity organisations to participate in helping the rehabilitated to reintegrate into society.

She was pleased that this year a total of 187 PUCI inmates obtained 257 certificates in various academic courses and public examinations organised by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority, the Open University of Hong Kong, the City and Guilds International, London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) International Qualifications and the Construction Industry Council.

Examinations passed by the inmates covered a variety of subjects including languages, mathematics, liberal studies, economics, tourism and hospitality studies, computer studies, accounting and book-keeping, hairdressing, Chinese kitchen assistant training, basic laundry skilla and decorative joinery.

The 46 inmates awarded certificates today had passed 74 papers, and achieved 27 distinctions and credits and 10 university credit points.

"The effort of PUCI staff is a manifestation of teaching all without discrimination. Through the process of custody and care, the ultimate goal is to support inmates to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society as law-abiding citizens. This coincides with the aims of Tung Wah Group of Hospitals of promoting education and nurturing youngsters, as both contribute to fostering the young generation for the community," Mrs Chan added.

Also attending the ceremony were the Commissioner of Correctional Services,
Mr Sin Yat-kin, representatives of community organisations, celebrities and parents of the inmates.

The PUCI, located at 399 Clearwater Bay Road, Sai Kung, has a capacity of 385 penal places for young male remand offenders and inmates.

The department provides half-day compulsory education programmes and half-day vocational training for young offenders under 2l years of age. Guidance and assistance are also in place for adult offenders who participate in studies on a voluntary basis.
