************************************

The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, went to Kowloon City this afternoon (December 3) to visit Carmel Secondary School, learn more about district-based urban renewal initiatives, tour the Cattle Depot Artist Village and meet with members of Kowloon City District Council.

Mrs Lam was accompanied by the District Officer (Kowloon City), Mr William Tsui, for the visit to Carmel Secondary School, where she toured the school premises and watched a demonstration by the school's Robotics Team which had participated in Robotics World Championship. She was given a briefing by the Principal, Mr Kung Kam-tim, on the teaching performance of "Other Learning Experiences" under the New Senior Secondary Curriculum and on the intake of students in light of the temporary decline in S1 student population. Mrs Lam also chatted with some of the teachers and students.

Mrs Lam then proceeded to the Cattle Depot Artist Village where the Chairman of the Kowloon City District Urban Renewal Forum, Dr Greg Wong, briefed her on the Preliminary Urban Renewal Proposals for Kowloon City and the views gauged in the Stage 1 Public Engagement. She also met local arts practitioners in the village to better understand their artistic creations.

Before concluding the visit, Mrs Lam met with members of the Kowloon City District Council to listen to the needs and concerns of the local community, including the "Energizing Kowloon East" project, the progress of urban renewal, maintenance of dilapidated buildings, traffic congestion and impact of funeral businesses on local residents.
