According to the results of the 2011 Annual Survey of Economic Activities - Industrial Sector released today (November 29) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), the manufacturing sector's total receipts (comprising sales and other receipts) amounted to $232.4 billion in 2011, representing an increase of 13.3% over 2010; on a per establishment basis, total receipts increased by 17.6% compared with 2010 to $23.4 million in 2011.
Operating expenses and compensation of employees of the manufacturing sector altogether amounted to $214.9 billion in 2011, representing an increase of 14.2% over 2010; on a per establishment basis, they increased by 18.6% compared with 2010 to $21.6 million in 2011.
Gross surplus of the manufacturing sector, which is equal to total receipts less operating expenses and compensation of employees, increased by 3.5% over 2010 to $17.5 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, gross surplus increased from $1.6 million in 2010 to $1.8 million in 2011. Gross surplus accounted for 7.5% of total receipts in 2011, down by 0.7 percentage point compared with 2010.
Value added of the manufacturing sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 0.4% over 2010 to $35.1 billion in 2011; on a per establishment basis, the value added was $3.5 million in 2011, which increased by 4.2% over 2010.
The manufacturing sector comprised some 9 900 establishments and engaged about 106 900 persons, or an average of 10.8 persons per establishment, in 2011.
Within the manufacturing sector, the four largest industry groupings in terms of value added in 2011 were (1) metal products, machinery and equipment industry; (2) food, beverages and tobacco industry; (3) paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry; and (4) chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry. They together accounted for 77.6% of the value added of the manufacturing sector.
In the metal products, machinery and equipment industry, total receipts amounted to $121.3 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $116.5 billion in 2011. Gross surplus decreased from $5.7 billion in 2010 to $4.8 billion in 2011, accounting for 3.9% of total receipts in 2011. Value added decreased by 7.6% compared with 2010 to $9.1 billion.
In the food, beverages and tobacco industry, total receipts amounted to $34.5 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $30.1 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $4.0 billion in 2010 to $4.4 billion in 2011, accounting for 12.7% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 7.1% over 2010 to $8.6 billion.
In the paper products, printing and reproduction of recorded media industry, total receipts amounted to $19.6 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $17.0 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $2.2 billion in 2010 to $2.6 billion in 2011, accounting for 13.3% of total receipts in 2011. Value added decreased by 0.1% compared with 2010 to $5.2 billion.
In the chemical, rubber, plastic and non-metallic mineral products industry, total receipts amounted to $20.2 billion while operating expenses and compensation of employees totalled $17.8 billion in 2011. Gross surplus increased from $2.2 billion in 2010 to $2.5 billion in 2011, accounting for 12.1% of total receipts in 2011. Value added increased by 14.8% over 2010 to $4.3 billion.
In addition to manufacturing establishments, the industrial sector also includes establishments engaged in mining and quarrying; electricity and gas supply; and sewerage, waste management and remediation activities. Selected statistics for the industrial sector (except mining and quarrying), with breakdowns by major industry grouping, are shown in the attached table.
