Judicial appointment

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (November 27) announced the appointment of the Honourable Mr Justice Aarif Tyebjee Barma, Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, as Justice of Appeal of the Court of Appeal of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from November 28, 2012.

     The appointment is made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.

     The biographical note of the Honourable Mr Justice Aarif Tyebjee Barma is as follows:

     The Honourable Mr Justice Barma was born in India in 1959. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (Jurisprudence) Degree and a Bachelor of Civil Law Degree from the University of Oxford in 1981 and 1982 respectively, he was called to the Bar in Hong Kong and the Bar in England and Wales (Middle Temple), both in 1983. He was admitted as Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore in 1991, and was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2002. He was in private practice since 1985 and was appointed as Deputy Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court for periods in 2002 and 2003. In 2003, he was appointed as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court.

     After his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Mr Justice Barma will continue to be the Judge in charge of the Admiralty List of the High Court until further notice.
