Fatal traffic accident in Chai Wan

     Police are investigating a traffic accident in Chai Wan this morning (November 19) in which three men died and 56 people were injured.

     At about 11.40am, a bus driven by a 57¡Vyear-old man was travelling downhill Chai Wan Road. On reaching near the junction of Chai Wan Road and A Kung Ngam Road, the bus reportedly hit two private cars in the front and crossed the opposite vehicular lane. It then rammed onto a taxi and a bus which were travelling uphill. The taxi was trapped between the two buses.

     After the impact, the 53-year-old taxi driver and two foreign male passengers of the taxi, aged 30 and 34, were trapped inside the compartment and were rescued by firemen. Sustaining serious injuries, they were rushed to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in unconscious state where they were later certified dead.

     Sustaining injuries, 56 persons including the two bus drivers, 23 male and 31 female passengers, aged from 7 months old to 90 years old, were sent to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Ruttonjee Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital and United Christian Hospital respectively for treatment.

     The 57¡Vyear-old bus driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death and was released on police bail.
 
     Investigations by the Special Investigation Team of Traffic, Hong Kong Island, are underway.
