CP attends INTERPOL General Assembly in Rome (with photos)

     The Commissioner of the Hong Kong Police, Mr Tsang Wai-hung, has led a four-member delegation to attend the 81st INTERPOL General Assembly in Rome, Italy starting on  November 5.  

     The governing body of INTERPOL, the General Assembly, meets once a year to discuss and endorse major policy decisions concerning INTERPOL.  The number of senior law enforcement officers from 167 member countries taking part in the General Assembly have reached the historic high to 1,200.

     The Hong Kong Police delegation, which includes Assistant Commissioner (Crime), Mr Lo Mung-hung; Chief Superintendent of Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, Mr Kwok Ho-fai and Senior Superintendent of Liaison Bureau, Mr Wong Ying-wai, is part of the Mainland delegation led by Mr Liao Jinrong, Director-General of the International Cooperation Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security.

     The theme of this year¡¦s General Assembly is "Challenges for Police Facing Contemporary Criminal Violence".  In the General Assembly, delegates discussed and endorsed a series of measures that strengthened the INTERPOL organisation to better serve member states and built partnerships, which would continue to enhance the capabilities of INTERPOL in its fight against transnational crimes.

     The General Assembly offered Mr Tsang the opportunity to hold bilateral side-meetings with strategic partners.  He met with senior police officers from the Australian Federal Police, the French National Police, the New Zealand Police and the Royal Malaysian Police to discuss matters on police cooperation.

     He also met with Mr. William J.S. Elliott, Special Representative of INTERPOL to the United Nations.  During the discussion, Mr Elliott welcomed the continued support of the Hong Kong Police to INTERPOL¡¦s work by seconding a Hong Kong police officer to the Office of the Special Representative of INTERPOL to the United Nations.

     The Commissioner will continue to take a side-trip to Germany on November 7 to meet with Mr Klaus-Dieter Fritsche, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, before returning to Hong Kong on November 9.
