The outdoor concert "Music Beyond Borders" will be held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza this weekend (November 3 and 4) from 2.30pm to 6pm each day. Featuring Georg Gratzer & Beefólk from Austria, Yuri Honing Wired Paradise from the Netherlands and the Claude Diallo Situation from Switzerland, the concert promises the audience music that crosses borders and boundaries. Admission is free.
Georg Gratzer & Beefólk comprises Georg Gratzer (woodwind), Klemens Bittmann (violin, mandola and vocals), Christian Bakanic (accordion, keyboards, percussion and vocals), Christian Wendt (acoustic bass and electric bass) and Jörg Haberl (drums and vocals). Their musical style brims with lively playfulness and virtuosity. European chamber music is fused with Asian-inspired sounds, such as those of the dizi, the hulusi and the bansuri, to create cinematic micro-scenes. The five pieces they will perform in the concert will create different musical scenes that together form a modern world music symphony. Each scene has its own character, enabling the audiences to enjoy the continuous sound worlds and groove fields.
Yuri Honing Wired Paradise from the Netherlands will perform a music work inspired by Indian novelist Aravind Adiga's wonderful novel "The White Tiger", which won the coveted Man Booker Prize in 2008. What Adiga's book and Yuri Honing's music have in common is the sound of surprise in the narrative, as well as a compelling vibrancy. Yuri Honing Wired Paradise defies categorisation with its mixture of jazz, rock and quasi-psychedelia. The group is a true festival band, primarily because of its explosiveness. Because of illness, Yuri Honing will not be present in the concert, but other members of Yuri Honing Wired Paradise will perform as scheduled.
Audiences can expect modern, beautiful and creative original compositions to be performed by the Claude Diallo Situation, which enjoys every second of its high-energy performances. This band really stretches out, playing with its greatest fluidity and opulence. Voted best band in 2011 in the Kind of Jazz series at the legendary Kaufleuten in Zurich, these Montreux Jazz Festival veterans will premiere new Asian-influenced compositions in their return to Hong Kong.
"Music Beyond Borders" is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Consulate General of Austria and the Consulate General of Switzerland in Hong Kong, in association with Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 4 and with the support of the Netherlands Consulate General in Hong Kong SAR and Macau SAR and the Friends of Radio 4 Society Limited.
