Judicial appointment

The following is issued on behalf of the Judiciary:

     The Judiciary today (October 31) announced the appointment of Mr Anthony Chan Kin-keung, SC, as Judge of the Court of First Instance of the High Court. The appointment will take effect from November 1, 2012.

     The appointment is made by the Chief Executive on the recommendation of the Judicial Officers Recommendation Commission.

     Further judicial appointments will be announced in due course.

     Mr Chan, who now holds office as a Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court, will cease to be a Recorder with effect from the same date.

     The biographical note of Mr Chan is as follows:

     Mr Anthony Chan Kin-keung, SC, was born in Hong Kong in 1960. He obtained LL.B. from the University of East London in 1983. He was called to the Bar in England and Wales, in Hong Kong, in the Australian Capital Territory and Federal Court of Australia and in Singapore in 1984, 1986, 1990 and 1995 respectively. He was appointed as Senior Counsel in 2003. After serving in the then Attorney-General's Chambers from 1985 to 1986, he has been in private practice since 1986. He served as a Deputy District Judge for periods in 1994, 1995 and 1997 and has been appointed as Recorder of the Court of First Instance of the High Court since 2006.
