The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Berlin (HKETO Berlin) hosted a luncheon talk in Munich on October 26 (Munich time), with President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST),Professor Tony Chan, as the keynote speaker.
In his welcome remarks, Mr Ivan Lee, Director of the HKETO Berlin referred to the high standards and outstanding achievements of Hong Kong's higher education institutions that provided the human capital and support for science and technology, "Hong Kong is recognised as the best in the world in university performance relative to GDP. Compared to size, we have more world-class universities than any other place in the world." Mr Lee quoted the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings for both 2011 and 2012 that distinguished HKUST as the top university in the whole of Asia. Together with the University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong has three universities ranked among the world's top 50 by the QS World University Rankings 2012-13.
In his speech to the guests, Professor Chan outlined Hong Kong's development in the science research field and the city's potential as a science and technology hub for China. Hong Kong combined the advantages of being both the gateway to China and an international education hub with world-class universities as well as research and development facilities. He concluded, "this offers unique opportunities in the field of science and technology for German institutions and companies given the close trade and economic relations between Germany and Hong Kong as well as Greater China and the increasing cooperation in science and technology between the two regions."
About 50 guests attended the luncheon, including senior government officials from the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology and the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts, the Chinese Consulate-General in Munich, representatives and academics from renowned German universities and research institutions, as well as leading figures from the business and the media.
