SCS visits Census and Statistics Department (with photos)
*********************************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Paul Tang, visited the Census and Statistics Department this afternoon (October 24) to learn more about the work of the department and to take the opportunity to meet staff.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Raymond Wong, Mr Tang first met with the Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Mrs Lily Ou-yang, and the directorate staff to gain greater insight into the department's work and challenges as well as its organisational structure.

Mr Tang was glad to learn that the department has continued to provide high-quality statistical services to facilitate research, discussion, planning and decision-making, both within the Government and in the wider community. This in turn contributes positively towards Hong Kong's social and economic developments.

He was also pleased to note that the department, together with statistical units set up in various government departments and bureaux combined to form the Government Statistical Service, provides reliable and timely services in accordance with international standards and principles.

Mr Tang proceeded to the Trade Statistics Processing Section, where he was briefed by staff on the processing of all import and export declarations and cargo manifests. The electronic services for import/export declarations and cargo manifests relating to rail, air and water trade have been implemented for some years. These declarations and manifests now have to be submitted electronically, which has significantly helped enterprises in saving time and resources.

Mr Tang then visited the Labour Statistics Branch to learn more about the use of data collected via the Quarterly Survey of Employment and Vacancies. He also watched a demonstration by staff on data collection via a computer-assisted telephone system. He was also briefed on the Manpower Requirement Projection conducted by the branch from time to time to assist with the formulation of policies on manpower development.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Tang met staff representatives of various grades at a tea reception and listened to their views. He said that he greatly appreciated colleagues' efforts and encouraged them to continue offering a professional and high-quality service.
