Cluster of post-operative orbital cellulitis under investigation
***************************************************

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health received notification from Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) today (October 15) of a cluster of post-operative orbital cellulitis affecting two patients.

The two patients, comprising a male and a female both aged 59, were patients of a private hospital where they received cataract operations performed by the same ophthalmologist in the same operation theatre at the same session on October 8.

Both of them presented with signs and symptoms of orbital cellulitis on October 10 and October 11 respectively. They were subsequently admitted to QEH for further management. Both were clinically diagnosed as having orbital cellulitis.

The male patient was discharged yesterday while the female patient is still hospitalised in a stable condition.

Orbital cellulitis is an inflammation of eye tissues posterior to the orbital septum. Symptoms include pain, redness and swelling around the eye.

     CHP's investigation is under way.
