Hong Kong Customs today (October 12) seized smartphones and tablet computers, with a total value of about $410,000, in an anti-smuggling operation at Shenzhen Bay Control Point. A coach was also detained for investigation.

Acting on information, Customs officers of the Special Task Force and Shenzhen Bay Division mounted a joint operation and intercepted an outgoing coach at about 10am this morning. Upon X-ray examination, the officers found a total of 35 unmanifested smartphones and 40 unmanifested tablet computers, worth around $410,000, were hidden inside two false compartments in the coach. The male driver, aged 50, was arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo. The investigation is continuing.

The Divisional Commander (Special Task Force) 1, Mr Chan Tsz-tat, said today (October 12) at the briefing that smuggling is a serious offence under the Import and Export Ordinance. Any person found guilty of attempting to export unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.

Customs will take continuous action against smuggling activities. Members of the public are urged to report any suspected smuggling activities to Customs through Customs' 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
