Working group to be set up to distinguish beauty services from medical procedures
**********************************************************

The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, today (October 12) said a working group will be set up under the Steering Committee on Review of the Regulation of Private Healthcare Facilities to speed up the differentiation of low-risk, non-invasive beauty services from high-risk medical treatments and the formulation of professional guidelines in order to protect public safety.

The working group will be chaired by the Director of Health. Members of the working group will include representatives from relevant medical specialities, the beauty industry and consumer groups.

Dr Ko said there was a general call in the community for a clear definition to differentiate beauty services from medical procedures as soon as possible.

"The working group would gather views of all stakeholders and make reference to overseas practices when undertaking its duties.

"We hope that the guidelines would meet public expectations while efforts are being made to map out the regulatory regime for high-risk medical treatments in non-hospital settings," he said.

At the same time, the Department of Health, the Customs and Excise Department and the Consumer Council will enhance public education on how to select safe beauty services.

"We will also step up our surveillance of beauty advertisements which involve high-risk procedures," Dr Ko said.
