Just back from the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad's World Shakespeare Festival, where he directed his latest production "Titus Andronicus", theatre director Tang Shu-wing will again team up with award-winning dancer-choreographer Xing Liang for a presentation in October. This time the duo draw inspiration from Cao Yu's classic play "Thunderstorm" to create a tantalising hybrid of dance and physical theatre.
"Thunderstorm" is produced by the Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio and is one of the programmes of the New Vision Arts Festival organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The show will be staged from October 26 to 28 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre.
The production, which develops around the inner world of the principal characters, blends Chinese classical dance, folk dance, modern dance and pantomime to generate a fresh choreographic vocabulary rich in meaning. With sets and costumes brilliantly recreating the early Republican period when modern China started to emerge from feudalism, the result is a captivating and novel interpretation of physical theatre.
As a centre for theatrical research and creation, Tang Shu-wing Theatre Studio's mission is "to bring theatre works of the highest quality to the maximum number of people". The studio also seeks to encourage innovation in Hong Kong theatre through physical theatre and minimalist aesthetics. It has two main visions: to create long-lasting, landmark productions for our city, thus contributing to its creative industry, and to build a local and international audience through cultural exchange. In 2012, the studio began a long-term collaboration with the Hong Kong Arts Centre as its residential theatre company.
"Thunderstorm" will be staged on October 26 and 27 at 8pm, and on October 28 at 5pm at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Studio Theatre. A meet-the-artists session will also be held after the performance on October 26.
Tickets priced at $260 and $160 are now available at URBTIX. Half-price tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above, people with disabilities and their minders, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients. Other booking discounts of up to 20 per cent are available.
