***********************************************************

Shun Cheong Plastering Limited was sentenced to a $50,000 fine at the Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (October 9) for failing to pay the sum of $40,000 to an employee as awarded by the Labour Tribunal. The prosecution was initiated by the Labour Department.

A spokesman for the Labour Department said the judgment would send a strong message to all employers that they have to ensure that payment of awards issued by the Labour Tribunal or the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board are duly complied with.

A spokesman for the Labour Department said, "The Labour Department will not tolerate offences of non-compliance of awards issued by the Labour Tribunal or the Minor Employment Claims Adjudication Board and will spare no effort in bringing to justice employers who defy the law."
