Vessel collision incident near Lamma Island (5)

     Upon police enquiries through contacts with the injured passengers and body identification, the number and name of persons on board "Lamma IV" tally with the information provided by Hong Kong Electric. Given that all persons on board "Lamma IV" have been identified and there are no outstanding reports of missing persons relating to the incident, all rescue parties have ceased the ongoing search operations. The Marine Department will continue to investigate the cause of the collision whilst the Police are conducting criminal investigation.

     Among the 124 passengers and three crew members on board "Lamma IV", 39 passengers died and 87 sustained injuries. One passenger did not require hospital treatment.

     Subsequent to the vessel collision near Lamma Island on October 1 evening, various rescue teams and medical staff were immediately deployed for rescuing injured persons and searching for missing passengers. The Home Affairs Department and the Social Welfare Department were also mobilised to provide assistance and support for the individuals and families affected by the vessel collision incident.

     Various government departments will continue to provide support and assistance to the families of the deceased as well as the injured and affected persons in this incident. Medical staff will exert their utmost effort in taking care of all the injured persons at hospitals.  Appropriate psychological counselling will also be provided to persons in need. The Home Affairs Department is coordinating support services for the families of the deceased and injured. The Social Welfare Department will continue to provide counselling and support services for individual and families in need and follow up on their welfare needs.

     Initial investigation conducted by the Police revealed that several vessels at scene had also rendered assistance in the vessel collision incident on October 1 evening. People on these vessels might have witnessed the occurrence of the incident. The Police appeal to the crew and passengers on board the concerned vessels to contact the police investigation officers through the investigation hotline 9188 2710.
