The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s Guangdong Music Series will present "Mesmerizing Wind and Bowed-strings - A Concert by the Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan" on October 14. Veteran local musician Tsoi Wing-hong will lead up-and-coming musicians Woo Pak-tuen, Chan Chi-yuk and Szeto Kin in performing a selection of familiar "soft-bow" works from the traditional repertoire of Cantonese music.
Under the baton of conductor Chan Kam-fai, the group will perform a series of tender Guangdong music pieces with violin, yangqin, yehu, yuehu and dizi soloists. The fascinating programme will include "Cantonese Opera Tunes Suite", "Dao-Chui-Lian", "United We Go", "Spring Comes to the Fields", "Billowing Waves", "Fish Frolic in the Water in Spring", "Hu Bu Gui", "Meditations in the Boudoir", "Laments of Lady Zhaojun", "Thunder in a Drought", "Nanyin", "The Flowing Water and the Drifting Clouds", "Pacing Horses", "The Regret", "Homecoming", "Sky with Falling Petals", "Intoxicated under the Moon", "A Victorious Return", "A Hungry Horse Shaking Its Bells", "In Celebration of Good Times", "Autumn Moon over a Placid Lake", "Pacing Horses in the Countryside in Spring" and "Weaving a Rainbow Miles Long".
Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan was established in 2005 with the goal of preserving and perpetuating traditional Chinese culture through music. Guangdong music is listed as intangible cultural heritage, and the group is popularising the genre and enhancing performance standards. It has given over 20 performances in various concerts and was invited to perform in the Sixth "Beijing 2008" Olympic Cultural Festival and a concert celebrating the 60th National Day of the People's Republic of China in 2009. The group also performed at the Arts Mart jointly organised in 2009 by the Home Affairs Bureau, the Education Bureau and the LCSD to promote Chinese music in Hong Kong.
Artistic Director Tsoi Wing-hong is a renowned recitalist in Cantonese music and also a versatile player of many musical instruments, especially the yangqin and the yuehu. After resettling in Hong Kong, he joined the Hong Kong Chinese Artists' Association (Pak Wo) in 1988. Tsoi then founded the Yin Ngai Opera and Musical Troupe and the Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan in 1988 and 2005 respectively. He is dedicated to the research, composition and revival of local Cantonese music culture.
"Mesmerizing Wind and Bowed-strings - A Concert by the Hong Kong Yue Yue Tuan" is one of the attractions of the Guangdong Music Series presented by the LCSD. The performance will be staged at 8pm on October 14 (Sunday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. Tickets priced at $160 and $120 are now available at all URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
