The Customs and Excise yesterday afternoon (October 2) cracked down a transnational drug trafficking attempt, after seizing some 6,300 grammes of cocaine with an estimated market value of $6.45 million at the Hong Kong International Airport and arresting a 25-year-old man.
Customs officers intercepted a man who arrived from São Paulo, Brazil and was in transit to Zhuhai by ferry yesterday afternoon for baggage examination and a total of approximately 6,300 grammes of cocaine were found from the false compartment of his suitcase.
The man, who claimed to be a waiter, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Courts this morning (October 3).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
