Cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement today (September 27):

     A 53-year-old patient admitted to the male rehabilitation ward of TMH was confirmed to have infection of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) on September 20. He has been transferred to the isolation ward for further treatment and observation and is in stable condition. In accordance with prevailing infection control guidelines, two more patients, aged 73 and 85, who had stayed in the same ward were confirmed on September 24 and today respectively to be carriers without showing symptoms. The patients concerned have also been transferred to the isolation ward and are in stable condition.

     There are clinical guidelines in public hospitals to ensure proper use of antibiotics, including Vancomycin, and proper management of VRE carriers. Admission to the ward concerned has been suspended, and restricted discharge from the ward has also been imposed. The hospital has stepped up infection control measures according to established guidelines and is closely monitoring patients' health.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.
