The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, today (September 22) presented commendation certificates to 35 volunteer leaders of youth uniformed groups (UGs) in recognition of their commitment in promoting youth training and development over the years.

At the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme 2012 certificate presentation ceremony, Mr Tsang said, "The Government is concerned about youth development and attaches great importance to the nurturing of our youths. The Home Affairs Bureau has been encouraging various sectors of the community to provide more opportunities for young people to develop their tenacity and potential, as well as contribute to society. Over the years the UGs have made invaluable contributions in the nurturing of young people. They have been dedicated to fostering youth development, nurturing numerous talents who are enthusiastic in serving the community."

With wide support from society, the development of youth UGs has been flourishing, with the number of UGs increasing to 13 so far. Joining the commendation scheme for the first year are the Association of Hong Kong Flag-guards and the Auxiliary Medical Service Cadet Corps. While the two associations have been providing services to nurture young people in different aspects in a short span of time, the other UGs have also been actively promoting and contributing to youth development.

Mr Tsang praised the volunteer leaders who were commended today for their outstanding performance and participation in youth training with firm beliefs and open minds over the years. He said he wished they could continue their efforts, setting an example to the community and passing on the spirit of selfless contribution.

He also hoped the UGs would continue to work with the Government to foster a younger generation that is committed, responsible and disciplined.

Set up in 2002 by the Home Affairs Bureau, the Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme marks its 10th anniversary this year. Over the past decade, the UG volunteer leaders have achieved remarkable results in the area of youth development.

All the volunteer leaders commended in the ceremony have provided services in their respective uniformed groups for a long time. All of them have served in their groups for at least 10 years, and seven have served for 30 years or more.
