Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will stage three concerts titled "Percussion Carnival" in October. An introduction to percussion instruments will also be included.
Under the baton of guest conductor Dr Law Po-kwan, the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will perform a selection of classic pieces, with percussion elements added. This fascinating programme includes Britten's "Excerpts from the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra", Strauss's "Thunder and Lightning Polka", Beethoven's "Excerpts from Symphony No.6, 4th Movement" and "Wellington”¦s Victory", Saint-Saens' "Fossil" (from Carnival of the Animals), Bach's "Double Violin Concerto, 1st Movement" (arranged for two marimbas), Tchaikovsky's "Trepak Dance" (from The Nutcracker) and "Spanish Dance" (from Swan Lake), and Dvorak's "Slavonic Dance No.5".
Dr Law Po-kwan, a native of Hong Kong, received a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Choral Conducting at the University of Illinois after studying under the renowned conductors Professor Chester Alwes and Professor Fred Stolzfus. She also recently completed her Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting degree under Professor Donald Schleicher. Dr Law has been invited to join master classes of conducting in America and Europe and has performed with various Baroque instrumental and choral ensembles in San Francisco. Her recent performances as a guest conductor with the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra, Illini String Orchestra, University of Illinois Philharmonia and the Illinois Chamber Orchestra were highly acclaimed by the audiences.
The music director Dr Yip Wai-hong is an eminent music educator and founder of the highly respected Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra. With the Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra Dr Yip aims to promote music among the general public and especially to Hong Kong”¦s younger generations. Over three decades the orchestra has performed frequently at Hong Kong City Hall, in regional town halls and civic centres. Thanks to the recruitment of internationally acclaimed conductors and soloists and through a blend of popular music and concert talks, the ensemble has successfully introduced orchestral music to the public.
"Percussion Carnival" by Pan Asia Orchestra will be staged at 8pm, October 12 (Friday) at the Theatre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre; 8pm, October 13 (Saturday) at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre; and 3pm, October 14 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre. Tickets priced from $90 to $130 are now available at all URBTIX, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for group bookings.
