Road Safety Council and 18 DCs promote safe cycling

The following is issued on behalf of the Road Safety Council:

     The Road Safety Council, in partnership with the 18 District Councils, held a launch ceremony for the safe cycling campaign today (September 15). Leaflets and souvenirs were distributed to members of the public across the territory to promote the message of safe cycling.

     Police figures have revealed that there were 1 540 cyclists injured in traffic accidents between January and August this year, an increase of 10 per cent when compared with the same period in 2011. Six of them were killed, a decrease of 40 per cent when compared with 2011.

     Representatives of the Road Safety Council and the 18 District Councils held the launch ceremony for the safe cycling campaign at the Amphitheatre, Po Kong Village Road Park, Po Kong Village Road, Diamond Hill, Wong Tai Sin, this morning.

     The Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Dr Eric Cheng; Acting Chief Superintendent of Police, Traffic Branch Headquarters, Ms Angela Ng; the Commissioner of the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol, Mr Robert Chui; and chairpersons and members of the Traffic and Transport Committees of the 18 District Councils officiated at the ceremony.

     Elsewhere in Hong Kong, Regional Road Safety Teams of the Police and the Road Safety Patrol handed out leaflets and souvenirs after the ceremony with a view to promoting safe cycling.
