Special traffic and transport arrangements for public processions on Hong Kong Island this Sunday

     The Transport Department (TD) today (September 14) reminded the public that special traffic and transport arrangements would be implemented from Causeway Bay to Central this Sunday (September 16) to facilitate the holding of public processions to be held on Hong Kong Island.

     Two public processions will be held this Sunday. Related special traffic and transport arrangements are as follows:

I. Public procession from Harbour Road Garden to Exchange Square at about 1.30pm

     The procession will depart from Harbour Road Garden for the destination at Exchange Square, via Harbour Road westbound, Fenwick Pier Street westbound, Lung Wui Road westbound, Tim Mei Avenue, Central Government Offices at Tamar, footbridge connecting CITIC Tower and United Centre, United Centre, Queensway Plaza, footbridge connecting Queensway Plaza and Pacific Place, Queensway westbound, Queen's Road Central westbound, Pedder Street northbound and footbridge outside World Wide House.

     The Police will implement intermittent closure of some traffic lanes along the procession route for the smooth conduct of the event.

II. Public procession from Victoria Park to Exchange Square at about 3pm

     The procession will depart from Victoria Park for the destination at Exchange Square, via Sugar Street, Yee Wo Street westbound, Hennessy Road westbound, Queensway westbound, Queen's Road Central westbound, Pedder Street northbound and footbridge outside World Wide House.

     The special traffic and transport arrangements will mainly include:

Road closure

Phase I

     The following roads will be closed from about 2.15pm:

1. The section of U-turn slip road between Gloucester Road southbound and northbound;
2. Sugar Street;
3. Jardine's Bazaar;
4. Tang Lung Street; and
5. The section of Canal Road East between Hennessy Road and Russell Street.

Phase II

     The following roads will be closed from about 2.45pm:

1. The section of Gloucester Road southbound between Victoria Park Road flyover and Causeway Road will be intermittently closed;
2. Irving Street (except vehicles heading for Regal Hong Kong Hotel);
3. The section of Yee Wo Street westbound between Pennington Street and Hennessy Road;
4. The section of Yun Ping Road between Kai Chiu Road and Pak Sha Road;
5. Kai Chiu Road;
6. The section of Lee Garden Road between Kai Chiu Road and Hennessy Road;
7. The section of Hennessy Road westbound between Yee Wo Street and Lee Garden Road;
8. The section of Canal Road West between Sharp Street West and Hennessy Road;
9. The section of Wan Chai Road between Canal Road West and Morrison Hill Road;
10. The section of Bowrington Road between Sharp Street West and Hennessy Road;
11. Hennessy Road westbound west of Lee Garden Road;
12. Queensway westbound will be intermittently closed;
13. The slip road leading from Johnston Road eastbound onto Hennessy Road westbound;
14. The section of Queen's Road Central between Garden Road and Pedder Street will be intermittently closed; and
15. Pedder Street northbound will be intermittently closed.

Public transport services

     A total of 76 bus routes and 12 green minibus routes operating at the affected areas will be temporarily diverted. The public transport operators concerned will arrange publicity to inform passengers of the temporary arrangements.

     Due to extensive road closures, the TD anticipates that the traffic from Causeway Bay to Central will be very congested on that day. Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected areas  In case of traffic congestion, motorists should exercise tolerance and patience, and follow the instructions of the Police. People who plan to go to the affected areas are advised to use public transport services.

     The TD and the Police will closely monitor the traffic situation and implement appropriate measures whenever necessary. Motorists and the public are advised to be alert to the latest traffic news on TV and radio.
