Seminar on Chinese Medicines concludes successfully (with photos)

     The Committee on Research and Development (R&D) of Chinese Medicines held the "Seminar on Chinese Medicines" at the Hong Kong Science Park today (September 14).

     The seminar, co-organised by the Department of Health, the Hospital Authority and the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, sought to share the latest research and development experience regarding Chinese medicines.

     More than 400 representatives from the Government, industry, academic and research sectors attended the seminar, which offered a valuable platform for stakeholders in the Chinese medicines sector to exchange views and explore collaboration opportunities.

     The Chairperson of the Committee on R&D of Chinese Medicines and Commissioner for Innovation and Technology, Miss Janet Wong; the Director of Health, Dr Constance Chan; and Director (Strategy & Planning) of the Hospital Authority, Dr Lo Su-vui delivered welcoming remarks.

     During the seminar, Assistant Director (Traditional Chinese Medicine) of the Department of Health, Dr Ronald Lam; Vice-Chancellor and President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Joseph Sung; Chair Professor of Department of Anatomy, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, University of Hong Kong, Professor So Kwok-fai; Dean of the School of Chinese Medicine, Hong Kong Baptist University, Professor Lu Aiping; Director of Xi Yuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Professor Tang Xudong; Vice Rector (Research and  Development) of Macau University of Science and Technology, Professor Liu Liang; Chief (Chinese Medicine and Integrative Medicine), the Hospital Authority, Dr Eric Ziea; Associate Director of TCM Lead, Asia Pacific R&D, Sanofi, Dr Guo Ruoling; and Member of the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, Mr Dominic Lam, presented various topics on Chinese medicines covering the regulatory regime, R&D and clinical trials, integrative medicine, local and regional R&D collaboration, and the testing and certification of Chinese medicines.

     In addition, a number of other local experts and scholars were invited to share their findings on various Chinese medicine research topics, including Chinese herbal medicines, acupuncture, herb-drug interaction and Qi-Gong.

     Established in December 2011, the Committee on R&D of Chinese Medicines aims to more effectively orchestrate the efforts of government, industry, and the academic and research sectors in promoting the development of R&D and testing of Chinese medicines to meet future needs. The secretariat support to the Committee is provided by the Innovation and Technology Commission.
