Update on cluster of Clostridium Difficile cases in Kowloon Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding some patients in a male rehabilitation ward of Kowloon Hospital who were infected with Clostridium Difficile toxin, the spokesperson for Kowloon Hospital gave the following update today (September 14):

     One more 86-year-old patient of the ward concerned had presented with diarrhoea symptoms. Appropriate viral testing was arranged for the patient and his test result was positive for Clostridium Difficile toxin. The patient is being treated under isolation and is in a stable condition.

     Admission to the ward has been suspended and restricted visiting to the ward has been imposed. Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
