The Government announced today (September 14) the appointment of Professor Ma Ching-yung as the Chairman of the Expert Committee on Food Safety.
At the same time, the appointment of nine new members and re-appointment of 10 incumbent members to the Expert Committee were also announced.
All the appointments are for a term of two years with effect from September 15.
Eight new members are local representatives. They are Dr Albert Chan Yan-wo, Professor Chen Zhen-yu, Ms Sylvia Chung Wai-man, Professor Vincent Lee Hon-leung, Mr Anthony Lock Kwok-on, Professor Wang Wen-xiong, Ms Jaime Wong Shuk-fong and Ms Rosa Wong Wan-ming. The new overseas member is Dr Chew Siang Thai.
Dr Chan is the Director and Consultant Chemical Pathologist of the Hospital Authority Toxicology Reference Laboratory, Princess Margaret Hospital. His expertise is in chemical pathology and toxicology.
Professor Chen is a Professor of the School of Life Sciences, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is also the Director of the Food and Nutritional Sciences Programme.
Ms Chung is the General Manager of L'hotel Island South. She is a member of the Tourism Strategy Group and a member of the Hong Kong Export Credit Insurance Corporation Advisory Board.
Professor Lee has been Professor and Director of School of Pharmacy, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, since September 2006 and is a world-renowned scholar in drug delivery.
Mr Lock is the Chief Executive Officer of Tsui Wah Group and the President of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades. Mr Lock is currently serving as a member of the Business Facilitation Advisory Committee and the convenor of its Food Business and Related Services Task Force.
Professor Wang is a Professor in the Division of Life Science, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Professor Wang is a member of the Working Group on Amendment to Food Adulteration (Metallic Contamination) Regulations under the Expert Committee.
Ms Jaime Wong is the General Manager at Wai Yuen Tong, Hong Kong. She has rich experience in the Chinese pharmaceutical and retailing industries, and supplying food and beverage products to customers globally.
Ms Rosa Wong is the Principal Research and Trade Practices Officer, Consumer Council. Ms Wong has years of experience working for the Consumer Council and is also a member of the Electricity Ordinance Appeal Board Panel.
Dr Chew is concurrently the Director-General and Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Regulatory Programmes and Operations Group) of Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) of Singapore. Dr Chew has been closely involved in key areas of food safety and veterinary public health in Singapore.
The Secretary for Food and Health, Dr Ko Wing-man, welcomed the new members and those re-appointed to the Expert Committee. He said the community looked forward to benefiting from their wise counsel to the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene on strategic and operational aspects of different food safety issues.
Dr Ko also thanked the outgoing chairman - Professor Kwan Hoi-shan and outgoing members - Dr Chan Pui-kwong, Professor Thomas Chan, Mrs Jenny Fung, Ms Connie Lau, Professor Jonathan Wong, Mr Lawrence Wong, Mr Simon Wong and Dr Chua Sin-bin from Singapore - for their valuable contributions to the work of the Expert Committee during their term of appointment.
The Expert Committee advises the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene on existing or new food safety operational strategies and measures to protect public health. It also sets standards/guidelines relating to food safety and food composition having regard to international practices, trends and developments.
