********************************************************

The Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards 2012, one of the largest open art competitions in Hong Kong presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, selected 14 winning entries today (August 31) from more than 1,900 entries after two rounds of selection.

The Hong Kong Museum of Art has organised the Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards since 1975. The aims of this open competition are to provide an accessible platform for the exhibition of excellent artworks by Hong Kong artists and survey the development of the Hong Kong art scene by showcasing the latest works of local visual artists. Many award winners from the past Biennials have become accomplished artists who today play a vital role in the Hong Kong art scene. In order to highlight its unique nature and mandate, and to reflect the artistic achievements of Hong Kong artists in the year, the new title Hong Kong Contemporary Art Awards (HKCAA) was implemented this year.

The adjudicators are composed of ten renowned artists and scholars from Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas and are divided into two groups ¡V Panel A and Panel B. The local adjudicators in Panel A are the art historian and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Professor Mayching Kao; calligrapher and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Mr Ou Dawei; Curator (Xubaizhai) of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Mr Szeto Yuen-kit and painter and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Mr Wucius Wong. The adjudicator from the Mainland in Panel A is painter and President of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, Professor Pan Gongkai. The local adjudicators in Panel B are sculptor, Associate Professor of Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Dr Ho Siu-kee; painter and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Mr Lui Chun-kwong; Curator (Modern Art) of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Mr Ng Ka-lun; and new media artist, Dean of School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong and Museum Expert Advisor to the LCSD, Professor Jeffrey Shaw. The overseas adjudicator in Panel B is Chicago-based art critic and independent curator, Ms Kao Chien-hui.

Based on the originality, creativity and artistic merit of the entries, a total of 347 works were selected from more than 1,900 submissions for the second round of judging and 10 award winners were finally selected. Two artists from the winners of the past 16 Hong Kong Art Biennial Exhibitions or Hong Kong Contemporary Art Biennial Awards with works submitted to this year's competition were selected for the Achievement Award, while two young artists were selected for the Young Artists Award.
