Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra in October concert
************************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's Great Music series presents a concert by renowned Latvian violinist Gidon Kremer and the acclaimed Kremerata Baltica chamber orchestra in October.

Kremer formed the Kremerata Baltica in 1997 to mark the year of his 50th birthday, and it rapidly gained an international reputation as one of the finest chamber orchestras of its generation. For its visit to Hong Kong, the ensemble's programme features Kremer as solo violinist in two works ¡V Shostakovich's "Violin Sonata" in a version for solo violin, strings and percussion, and Schumann's sweepingly romantic "Cello Concerto" transcribed as a violin concerto. The orchestra will also perform Bruckner's "Adagio" (from String Quintet in F) and "Symphony No.10" by the Polish/Russian composer Weinberg, a protˆmgˆm of Shostakovich.

Of the world's leading violinists, Gidon Kremer has perhaps had the most unconventional career. His repertoire is unusually extensive and he is always willing to bring new music to audiences in a way that respects tradition yet remains contemporary. Kremerata Baltica, a pun on Camerata and the Kremer's name, is comprised mostly of young musicians from the Baltic States. The ensemble is well versed and widely acclaimed in performing Kremer's bold and innovative contemporary repertoire.

"Gidon Kremer, the great Latvian violinist and the brilliant chamber orchestra he has drawn from his own and neighbouring republics, performed with flair, intensity, precision and delicacy." The Independent (UK)
