Local authors to discuss the different colours of life explored through reading
*******************************************************

Reading can encourage people to write and to understand more about the people and places around them. From different literary works, one can feel writers' passion for literature, their concern for society and their ways of thinking, which can all stimulate readers to strive for a better world. In a bid to encourage teenagers to read more, several writers will share their personal experiences on writing and reading in the coming months, as well as discuss their views on the city, nature, martial arts, culture and literature.

Organised by the Hong Kong Public Libraries (HKPL) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, this year's "Meet the Authors" talks have been held at various public libraries since March. The remaining nine talks will be held from September to November.

Under the theme "Reading the Life of ...", the talks comprise three series, namely "Encounter with Literature: Inheritance and Innovation of Life", "Dialogue with Society: Care for and Response to Life" and "Living with the World: Reflection and Exploration of Life". The talks are conducted in Cantonese and admission is free.

Nine authors will share their experiences in writing and reading in different talks held at various public libraries. The speakers are Assistant Professor of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of the Hong Kong Baptist University Dr Ge Liang, martial arts fiction writer Jozey, Reporters Without Borders writer Ms Cheung Chui-yung, comic artist Mr Lee Chi-ching, science fiction writer Mr Lee Wai-choi, cultural critic Mr Perry Lam, children and early youth literature writers Mr Chan Hung and Mr Mak Hiu-fan, and Guest Lecturer at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Design Ms Chau Yee-mei.

In the series entitled "Encounter with Literature: Inheritance and Innovation of Life", Dr Ge Liang will speak about the development from traditional classics to literature on September 8, while Jozey will discuss martial arts fiction and the position of martial arts in Chinese popular culture on September 15. Mr Lee Chi-ching will share his own experiences in composing comics and Western and Chinese paintings, as well as literary works, on October 6. Mr Chan Hung will recommend classic literature suitable for teenagers on October 20, and Mr Mak Hiu-fan will share the joy of reading and writing with readers on November 10.

In the series entitled "Dialogue with Society: Care for and Response to Life", authors will analyse different social cases and discuss how to improve society. Mr Perry Lam will discuss with readers on November 3 how to keep a clear-headed lifestyle in a changing society, and Ms Chau Yee-mei will share with readers on November 17 her book which provides motivation for social activities through pictures and writing.

Through their works, writers can share their journeys of discovery and progress through natural and man-made disasters. In the series entitled "Living with the World: Reflection and Exploration of Life", Ms Cheung Chui-yung will talk about the creativity of Middle Eastern people and their inspiration for Asia on September 22, and Mr Lee Wai-choi will discuss the relationship between the universe and life, and also means to attain happiness, on October 13.
