*****************************************************

The Under Secretary for Home Affairs, Ms Florence Hui, attended the debriefing session of the Service Corps Programme (Phase II) today (August 21) to get together with the delegates and exchange views with them on what they have learnt from their voluntary teaching support services in the Mainland.

At the debriefing session, Ms Hui listened to the delegates' sharing of their experiences and daily lives in the Mainland during the service period. She also thanked the delegates for their active participation and outstanding performance, which had contributed to the success of the programme. She said she hoped delegates could keep up the volunteer spirit of selfless dedication and continue to serve the society and contribute to their motherland in different capacities in the future.

The delegates of the Service Corps Programme (Phase II) provided voluntary services in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, from February to July this year. They mainly provided teaching assistance in subjects such as English, sports, music, arts, geography, science and computing, and support in organising extra-curricular activities.

The Chief Executive announced in the 2010-11 Policy Address the establishment of the Service Corps, with a view to providing financial support for youths aged between 18 and 29 to serve in underprivileged areas in the Mainland for six to 12 months. The programme aims to develop Hong Kong young people's tenacity and potential, and encourage them to serve others and contribute to the country, as well as promote the spirit of volunteerism. Recruitment of Phase III of the programme has been completed. Selected delegates are expected to start their service in Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, in September.

Information about the Service Corps Programme is available at its dedicated website: www.servicecorps.hk.
