Correctional staff seize suspected dangerous drugs

     Correctional officers seized suspected dangerous drugs from an inmate on remand at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre yesterday (August 14) and today (August 15), stopping attempts to smuggle dangerous drugs into correctional institutions two days in a row.

     Acting on intelligence, officers found that the inmate had discharged a total of six tablets of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic sheet during security checks in two consecutive afternoons since yesterday.

     The male inmate, aged 34, was remanded at Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre for an offence of trafficking in dangerous drugs on August 13.

     The case has been reported to the Police for investigation.

     A Correctional Services Department spokesperson said, "With effective mechanism to collect intelligence, the department takes every measure to stop the introduction of dangerous drugs into correctional institutions and to eradicate their presence there. We are committed to maintaining a drug-free environment for all people in its custody."

     There have been 106 seizures of dangerous drugs to date this year. Most seizures were made in reception centres.
