Trial on temporary traffic and transport arrangements for tram track renewal work on Johnston Road in Wan Chai

     The Transport Department (TD) today (August 9) reminded the public that a trial on the temporary traffic and transport arrangements to facilitate tram track renewal work will be implemented in Wan Chai from 10.30am next Monday (August 13) to 10.30am next Tuesday (August 14).
  
     The trial temporary traffic and transport arrangements will mainly include:

(1) Temporary traffic arrangements

* The section of Johnston Road westbound between Swatow Street and Tai Wong Street East will be temporarily closed to all vehicular traffic except for trams. Motorists heading for Admiralty and Central could travel via Hennessy Road westbound or Gloucester Road westbound.

* The section of Johnston Road westbound between Tai Wo Street and Swatow Street will be temporarily closed to vehicles exceeding 7 metres in length.

(2) Temporary transport arrangements

* The tram stop on Johnston Road westbound near Amoy Street will be relocated forward by about 30 metres to Johnston Road westbound near Swatow Street.

* The Wan Chai-bound service of Green minibus (GMB) route No. 4B (Aberdeen (Shek Pai Wan) - Wan Chai (Circular)) will be diverted via Wan Chai Road, Fleming Road, Lockhart Road westbound, Fenwick Street southbound and Johnston Road eastbound before resuming its original route in Ship Street.

* The Wan Chai-bound service of GMB route No. 35M (Aberdeen (Shek Pai Wan) - Wan Chai (Johnston Road)) will be diverted via Queen's Road East westbound and Tai Wong Street East before resuming its original route on Luard Road.

     Notices will be put up by the Hong Kong Tramways and related GMB operators to inform passengers of the above temporary arrangements.

     Motorists are advised to avoid driving to the affected areas in Wan Chai South. Those heading for Admiralty and Central are advised to divert via Hennessy Road westbound or Gloucester Road westbound. In case of traffic congestion, motorists should exercise tolerance and patience, and follow the instructions of the Police. People planning to go to the affected area are advised to use public transport as far as possible.

     The TD and the Police will closely monitor the traffic situation and implement appropriate measures whenever necessary. The public are advised to be alert to the latest traffic news on radio and television.
