The Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe will perform three classics in September and October. The three works to be staged are "The Marriage of Three Smiles", "The Warrior's Marriage" and "The Villain, the General and the Heroic Beauty".
The performances will start at 7.30pm. Details are as follows:
September 15 (Saturday)
Auditorium, Tai Po Civic Centre
"The Marriage of Three Smiles"
Cast: Yuen Sin-ting, Hong Wah, Wong Po-hyun, Chan Hung-chun (guest), Bak Wan-lung (guest) and Lui Hung-kwong (guest)
Tickets: $90 and $120
In the Ming dynasty the handsome top scholar Tang Bohu is admired by ladies from reputable families. One day, while he is touring a scenic spot, he meets the beautiful maid Qiuxiang among the entourage of Lady Hua, who is on her way to offer incense at the Tianzhu Temple. Tang learns later that the Hua family wants to employ a helper. In order to see Qiuxiang, he offers himself to take up service and finally a classic love story unfolds.

"The Warrior's Marriage"

General Hua Yunlong conceals his identity as the Prince of Gusu and goes into Northern Han territory to make an offer for the hand of Princess Yinping with an ulterior political motive. General Zhang Dingbian of the Northern Han sniffs out foul play, but Princess Yinping trusts Hua totally. She marries him, and even persuades her father to ride to Li Mountain to join forces with Gusu in resisting Zhu Yuanzhang, the Ming emperor. As the Northern Han army arrives, Hua reveals his identity and, in the skirmish that follows, kills the king. The princess vows to cut off Hua's head in revenge for her father's death. At last, the princess learns that the King of Northern Han was in fact her nemesis, for he had killed her real father and left her mother in disgrace. She and Hua are reconciled.
October 15 (Monday)

"The Villain, the General and the Heroic Beauty"
Cast: Lam Tin-yau, Cheng Nga-kei, Chan Hung-chun (guest), Kwok Kai-fai (guest), Lam Tsz-ching, Lai Yiu-wei, Wong Sze-long (guest) and Yuen Sin-ting
Tickets: $90, $120 and $140
After the death of the King of Liang, the second prince, Wenyong, intends to seize the throne. The veteran Zhao Jiguang and the third prince go to Dan Yang to seek Princess Yinping's military support to help the crown prince to take the throne. At that time, Wenyong also goes to seek military support from the princess. Yinping has affection for Wenyong, so she helps him to ascend the throne. Soon after that he decides to get rid of her. Fortunately General Wei Gancheng, a secret admirer of the princess, comes to her rescue, and the two become husband and wife.
The performances by the Hong Kong Young Talent Cantonese Opera Troupe are one of the programmes in the Young Cantonese Opera Artists Series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients.
