The Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, visited an elderly service centre and a food assistance service centre in Sham Shui Po this afternoon (August 1) to learn more about support for the low-income group at the community level.
Mr Tsang first arrived at the Ho Kin District Community Centre for Senior Citizens sponsored by Sik Sik Yuen to visit the elderly users there. Serving the district for over two decades, the community centre is currently providing support services to some 3,000 people, including 1,000 outreach service beneficiaries. Mr Tsang noted that different working groups under the Sham Shui Po District Council also allocate funds to support elderly projects every year.
He then went to the Food For All - Food Assistance Service of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals to better understand the demand for service from people with economic difficulties.
He said, "Many voluntary agencies in Hong Kong have been providing suitable services in the community to assist the poor and the disadvantaged. Many people volunteer to take part in community services to promote a caring spirit and the Government has always attached great importance to the contributions made by charitable organisations and volunteers."
Mr Tsang also visited a public housing tenant who had just moved to Un Chau Estate.
