Following the success of "The Unexpected Guest" in 2009, local arts group Theatre Space will perform another acclaimed play, "The Hollow" by Agatha Christie, in September.
The play, based on the novel of the same title, follows the complicated relationships among seven people struggling between "to have and have not" and "to love and love not". When members of the Angkatell family gather at a country house for the weekend, they certainly do not expect one of their guests, John Cristow, to be shot dead - and absolutely not by his devoted wife Gerda. At least, most people assume it must have been Gerda as she was found with the gun in her hand. But John, with his dying breath, spoke Henrietta's name twice. And what is Veronica Craye, John's old flame, doing in the neighbourhood?
"The Hollow" had its initial run at London's West End in 1951 and soon was taken to other parts of the world. The novel has been translated into numerous languages, and adapted into a radio play, film and television drama. The forthcoming performance is translated and directed by Dominic Cheung and produced by Jacob Yu. The cast includes Ida Leung, Luther Fung, Patra Au, Cissy Ma, Ko Kai-cheung, Kiu Po-chung, Lianna Tse, Annie Ling, Yu Sai-tang, Gigi Cheng, Kwong Kam-chuen and Albert Ngai.
Agatha Christie is one of the world's best-selling novelists. Dubbed "the Queen of Crime", the Briton had an oeuvre of 66 detective novels, over 100 short stories and 17 plays, reflecting her love of the theatre. Her family founded the Agatha Christie Theatre Company tasked mainly to manage and produce her plays. Christie's detective novels are distinguished by intricate plots, insightful presentation of human nature, and the ability to draw readers into the world she creates.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "The Hollow" will be performed in Cantonese at 7.45pm on September 7 and 8 (Friday and Saturday) and at 2.45pm on September 9 (Sunday) at the Cultural Activities Hall, Sha Tin Town Hall, and at 7.45pm on September 14 and 15 (Friday and Saturday) and at 2.45pm on September 16 (Sunday) at the Cultural Activities Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Tickets priced at $160 are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients. (Limited tickets for full-time students and CSSA recipients are available on a first-come, first-served basis.) A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for the group booking package. Post-performance talks will be held after each show.
