Four patients from Queen Elizabeth Hospital confirmed to be Multiple-drug Resistant Acinetobacter carriers

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement today (July 25):

     Four male patients (aged 63 to 85) of a medical ward at QEH were confirmed to be carriers of Multiple-drug Resistant Acinetobacter since July 10. Two of them have been transferred to the isolation ward for further treatment and observation and are in stable condition. Another patient has been transferred to Hong Kong Buddhist Hospital for isolation treatment. The remaining one succumbed on July 21 because of his end-stage lung cancer and Pseudomonal chest infection.

     The hospital has stepped up infection control measures according to established guidelines and is closely monitoring patients' health.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for follow-up.
