Over 400 young musicians, who have recently received intensive training from well-known local and overseas musicians at the 2012 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp, will perform a variety of Chinese and Western musical pieces at two August afternoon concerts to share their achievements with the public.
The first concert will be held at 3pm on August 5 (Sunday) at the Concert Hall of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, with performances by the Camp Chinese Orchestra, Children's Choir and Junior String Orchestra.
Highlights of the programme include Bach's "Bist Du Bei Mir"; the Spanish choral piece "Yo Le Canto Todo El Dia"; Schubert's "String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810" (known as "Death and the Maiden"); and Chew Hee-chiat's "Orchestra Suite No. 2", featuring a unique southeast Asian style and the Beijing operatic tune "Luan Yun Fei".
The second concert, to be performed by the Camp Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Junior Chinese Orchestra, will be held at 3pm on August 12 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of Tsuen Wan Town Hall.
The programme includes Zhu Lin's "The Shade of a Dance"; "Morning Alleluias" featuring winter solstice; Wiffin's "Pagan Ritual" and William Schuman's "New England Triptych", which is often known as "Three Pieces for Orchestra After William Billings".
The conductors for the concerts are the Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Mr Chew Hee-chiat; Professor of Music at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA), Dr Pearl Shangkuan; the first Chinese prize winner of the International Cello Competition in Geneva, Switzerland, Mr Chu Yibing; Founding Artistic and Executive Director of American Century Music, Mr Scott Parkman; Conductor of the Derbyshire City and County Youth Wind Band (UK), Mr Colin Touchin; and Assistant Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra and Concert Orchestra of the College-Conservatory of Music of the University of Cincinnati (USA), Mr Jing Huan.
Presented by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the 2012 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp Concerts are part of the summer International Arts Carnival 2012.
The Hong Kong Youth Music Camp is a major annual summer music activity of the Music Office, providing intensive training to musicians at a scenic campsite setting. Participating musicians are also encouraged to take part in recreational and sports activities at the camp.
Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessionary tickets are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities including their care assistant, and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
