************************************************************

Organised by the Art Promotion Office (APO), the second-phase exhibition under "ArtAlive@Park2012" was launched today (July 14) at the Tai Po Waterfront Park. The exhibition will bring to the park in the coming two months not only a series of artworks but also a number of cultural performances and activities.

Entitled "Sensing Horizons: Five Excursions into Intimate Immensity", the exhibition features five artworks created by students from the School of Architecture of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) . The exhibition was officially opened today. Officiating guests were the Deputy Director (Culture) of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Cynthia Liu; the Dean of the Faculty of Social Science of CUHK, Professor Paul Lee; the Chairman of the Tai Po District Council, Mr Cheung Hok-ming; the Executive Director of HULU Culture, Ms Iman Fok; and the Chief Curator of the APO, Ms Lesley Lau.

"ArtAlive@Park 2012" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and organised by APO. HULU Culture was invited to be the curatorial collaborator in the project.

Speaking at today's opening party, Ms Liu said "ArtAlive@Park" is an exploratory public art project with the collaboration of LCSD and local universities. The purpose of the project is to bring art to different levels and spaces in daily life, such as the LCSD's parks, allowing the public easier access to art. It also provides a platform for university students to create and show their works.

Running in three phases, "ArtAlive@Park2012" features three exhibitions at waterfront parks in Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories. The first exhibition was held at the Tsim Sha Tsui East Waterfront Podium Garden from March to May this year.

The second exhibition, "Sensing Horizons: Five Excursions into Intimate Immensity", now on at the Tai Po Waterfront Park until September 30, shows five artworks by students from CUHK's School of Architecture. They created site-specific and interactive artworks intended to reflect the subtle relationship between heaven, earth and people according to the terrain, surroundings and characteristics of the Tai Po Waterfront Park.

The five sets of artworks comprise "Sky Lines", which offers visitors different visual effects and shade so they can enjoy a fresh look at a previously familiar space; "Floating Petals", installed inside a pool, illustrating the movement of air; "Looking for Alice", an interactive artwork inspired by "Alice in Wonderland"; "Lenscape", which makes use of theories of reflection and refraction to capture unusual visual effects; and "Ridethebench", which prompts people to rethink the possibilities offered by the simple bench.

The LCSD has also invited Don't Believe in Style, Studio de Dimension de Tofu, Lung and Lam Company Limited, Horizonte, Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, Hiromi Company and others to offer colourful programmes and activities during the exhibition period. Programmes include "Combustive Percussion" led by Dr Lung Heung-wing, an a cappella performance "Musika Sans Fronteras" by Orange, "Joyful Dance Fusion" by a group of talented artists with disabilities, light painting workshop "Dreams Light Up the Sky" which involves the use of digital cameras, "A Dialogue with Art" which interprets artworks on display by way of drama, and "A Wonderful Day with ArtAlive@Park" which combines the fun of a guided art tour, orienteering and games. In addition, free public and school tours will be held at the park.

The third-phase exhibition by students of CityU's Division of Building Science and Technology will be held at the Stanley Promenade from November to January next year.
