New programs of Outreach Music Interest Courses open for application

     The Outreach Music Interest Courses organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) are now open for application. Over 100 courses, from Chinese and Western musical instrument classes to music workshops, will offer interesting and educational content for applicants of all ages. These courses, conducted in Cantonese, will be held from September to January next year.

     Four new workshops will be available. "Traditional Cantonese Music" will look at the history and development of this music genre through the presentation of classic Cantonese music. "The World Renowned Pianists" will introduce the playing styles and performances of great classical pianists like Rachmaninoff, Hofmann and Rubinstein, as well as their influence on the development of classical music.

     "Introduction to Early Childhood Music Education" specially caters for parents and kindergarten teachers to help them understand the musical development of children aged 2 to 6. Those who have completed the Music Office's Outreach Foundation II course for flute and are aged 15 or above can participate in "Flute Ensemble Playing" to learn more techniques and enjoy the fun of playing music in a group.

     Other regular workshop series include harmonica, guitar and keyboard playing, vocal singing, sight-singing and aural skills, Western music theory and ensemble playing series on Chinese music instruments, Western strings and saxophone. All are available for different age groups. The course fees for the workshop series range from $240 to $600.

     To provide short-term basic music training for all ages, the Outreach Music Interest Courses also provide fundamental music training on xiao, dizi, liuyeqin, pipa, zhong-ruan, yangqin, zheng, erhu, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, percussion, violin, viola and cello. The course fee is $800.

     The courses will be conducted in small groups at different venues throughout Hong Kong. They are the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Tuen Mun Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library, Pei Ho Street Sports Centre (Sham Shui Po) and the Music Office's five music centres at Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

     Online applications are now available at the Music Office's website www.lcsd.gov.hk/CE/CulturalService/MusicOffice/en/events_2011_12_22.php. Course prospectuses and application forms are also available at all performing venues of the LCSD and music centres of the Music Office. The deadline for applications is July 25. Oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. For courses not fully taken up, applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis from August 21.
