Nutrition labelling award schemes prize presentation ceremony (with photos)
*****************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) staged a prize presentation ceremony today (July 9) for the "Live it, Use it" Nutrition Labelling Fun Shopping Award Scheme and the "Live it, Use it" Nutrition Labelling Promotion Award Scheme at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene, Mr Clement Leung, said the Nutrition Labelling (NL) Scheme, which came into effect two years ago, assisted consumers in making informed food choices that met their individual needs.

Noting that good eating habits and knowing how to choose the right food help prevent nutrition-related diseases and bad health, Mr Leung said the CFS had launched a series of public education and publicity events. The aim was to reach out to the public in promoting the use of nutrition information on prepackaged foods in daily life.

The CFS, with the support of the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, launched the NL Fun Shopping Award Scheme in mid-December 2011.

A total of 18 community service organisations participated in the scheme and organised a variety of promotional and educational activities for their service users. Over 900 individuals joined the activities held by the community service organisations.

"We all agree that healthy eating habits should be developed at school age. We encourage young people to take part in promoting NL and healthy eating in their families and the community," Mr Leung said.

The CFS and the Education Bureau jointly organised the NL Promotion Award Scheme for the second consecutive academic year. The scheme, supported by the Committee on Home-school Co-operation, aimed at encouraging students to actively promote NL to develop healthy eating habits through the use of nutrition information.

Under the scheme, a total of 28 teams from 18 secondary schools participated in planning and implementing NL promotional activities.
