Competent person and worker sentenced for conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice and violation of safety rules

     A competent person and a worker for a drainage contractor were sentenced at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (July 9) to 180 hours of community service and six months in jail respectively, suspended for 24 months, for conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice under the Crimes Ordinance, and fined $20,000 and $5,000 respectively for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Confined Spaces) Regulation. The prosecutions were launched by the Police and the Labour Department.

     The case involved a fatal accident in Kwai Chung on June 17 last year, in which a drainage worker who was working inside an underground drainage pipe drowned as a result of a sudden inrush of water into the pipe.
