The membership of the Assessment Committee comprises persons from the tourism, culture, arts, sports and event management sectors as well as representatives from the Home Affairs Bureau, the Information Services Department, and the Tourism Commission.

The Assessment Committee advises the Government on the administration of the Mega Events Fund, including drawing up the procedures, guidelines and criteria for assessing applications; considering applications; monitoring the progress of events supported by the Fund and evaluating their performance.

"We are grateful to the Chairman and members of the Assessment Committee for their valuable contribution and dedicated effort in carrying out the diversified tasks for the success of the Fund in the past three years. With their professional expertise and rich experience in the respective fields, we are confident that the Assessment Committee will continue to carry out its job competently and bring more signature mega events to Hong Kong," a Government spokesman said.

The Mega Events Fund was established in May 2009 for a term of three years.  In his 2012-13 Budget, the Financial Secretary proposed to allocate $150 million to the Mega Events Fund and extend its operation for five years. Funding approval was subsequently obtained from the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council to extend the operation of the Fund under a modified two-tier system to attract more internationally acclaimed mega events to Hong Kong and reinforce Hong Kong's position as the Events Capital of Asia.

Under the new scheme, Tier 1 aims to attract internationally acclaimed mega events to Hong Kong, and Tier 2 will be an enhanced version of the previous scheme, which aims to provide funding support to local non-profit-making organisations to host mega events including arts, culture, sports and entertainment events in Hong Kong.
