About 8,500 kilograms of frozen pig heads, tails and intestines without accompanying official health certificates were detained in Sheung Shui yesterday (June 7) by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).
The food items were detained when officers of the FEHD raided an unlicensed cold store in Chau Tau at about 8am yesterday following prolonged surveillance.
A 44-year-old man arrested in the operation has been released on police bail pending investigation.
Under the Food Business Regulation, the maximum penalty for operating an unlicensed cold store is six months' imprisonment and a $50,000 fine.
"We will continue our stringent enforcement action against unlicensed food business to safeguard food safety and public health," an FEHD spokesman said.
The spokesman appealed to members of the public to report illegal food business activities by calling the FEHD hotline at 2868 0000.
