Entries invited for lantern design competition

     Entries are now being invited from the public for the Mid-Autumn Lantern Design Competition 2012. The competition is jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and the Education Bureau to promote the handicraft of lantern-making and to arouse public interest in traditional Chinese arts.

     The competition comprises three divisions: Primary School Division, Secondary School Division and Open Division.

     Primary and secondary students should submit entry forms through their schools by June 26 (Tuesday). The Open Division is open to tertiary students and amateurs. Interested people should send their entry forms to the LCSD's Entertainment Office by mail to 11/F, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, or by fax to 2575 0864 by July 10 (Tuesday).

     Participants may enter as individuals or as groups of no more than four persons. Each participant may submit only one entry including group work. The same lantern cannot be submitted to more than one division.

     All handmade lanterns with completed official labels should be submitted to the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central, between September 13 and 15 from 10am to 8pm.

     The panel of judges will be made up of arts educators and artists. The first three winners in each division will be awarded book coupons worth $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200, and entries judged to be outstanding will be awarded book coupons of $400. All winners will also be awarded certificates of merit.

     Grand prizes will also be awarded to those with distinguished designs: Lantern of the Best Visual Effect, Lantern with the Most Inspirational Design and Lantern with the Most Creative Design. To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and to further promote "The Majesty of All Under Heaven - The Eternal Realm of China's First Emperor" presented by the Hong Kong Museum of History, a Lantern with the Most Creative Design of Terracotta Warriors award will be added. Each winner will receive a book coupon of $500 and a certificate of merit.

     All lanterns will be displayed at the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, from September 27 to October 6.
