Pay freeze for political appointees of next-term Government
***********************************************************

The Government today (June 5) announced that the proposal to increase the remuneration for politically appointed officials (PAOs) would not be pursued.

The Chief Executive-elect announced that the entire political team of the next-term Government will have their pay frozen at the present level, i.e. at the 2009 level following the voluntary pay cut of 5.38 per cent.

PAOs took the voluntary pay cut in 2009. At present, the levels of remuneration for PAOs are 5.38 per cent lower than those approved by the Finance Committee of the Legislative Council in 2002. Cumulative inflation since 2002 has amounted to 15.2 per cent. The Government originally proposed to increase remuneration for PAOs by 8.1 per cent.
