The Leisure and Cultural Services Department is organising a vocal music lecture demonstration series to be held in July. Renowned local soprano Francesca Chan will introduce the music Schubert composed in his different periods, and will give live performances of Schubert's works, including "Die Forelle", "An die Musik", "Lied der Mignon", "Die Schöne Mˆ¢llerin", "Shepherd on the Rock" and "Du Liebst mich Nicht", accompanied by musicians during the four lectures.
The vocal music lecture demonstration series will include the topics "The Early Years", "The Mature Works", "Schwanengesang" (The Swan Song) and "Love and Loss", scheduled for 7.30pm on July 5, 12, 19 and 26 (Thursdays) respectively at the Recital Hall, 8/F, High Block, Hong Kong City Hall.
Francesca Chan graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and holds a fellowship of Trinity College London with specialisations in voice and piano. She was coached by famous teachers in France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the United States and the United Kingdom, and has taught at the Music Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. With a fine gift for languages, she has a large and extensive repertoire which she expresses with an elegantly beautiful voice. Her good understanding of the stylistic nuances and the in-depth emotions of various composers are expressed through her consummate vocal techniques. As a performer, she is capable of interacting well with the audience.
Chan has performed all over the world, covering Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand, China and elsewhere in Asia, and the works she has performed involve 10 different languages. She is adept in the execution of both Chinese and Western works, and with her clear, sparkling and expressive voice she has found a place among the fine singers in the West. She has performed with many choral groups in chamber music works which range from the classical to the contemporary. She has also given demonstration recitals in the United States, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai and cities in Southeast Asia.
The series is conducted in Cantonese with English illustration. Tickets priced at $50 per lecture are now available at URBTIX outlets, on the Internet and by credit card telephone booking. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities and their minders, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients (limited tickets for students and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis). A maximum discount of 20 per cent is offered for group bookings.
