The following is issued on behalf of the Environmental Campaign Committee:

Over 300 housing estates have participated in "World Environment Day 2012 - Green Home Action", organising various environmental activities to encourage their residents to go green. Representatives of housing estates were presented with certificates of appreciation at an event held by the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC) today (June 3) in commendation of their efforts.

Those officiating at the "World Environment Day 2012 - Green Home Action" public event at Plaza Hollywood, Diamond Hill included the Vice-chairman of the ECC, Professor Jonathan Wong; the Deputy Director of Environmental Protection, Mr Benny Wong; and representatives of supporting organisations, namely the Hong Kong Housing Society and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies Limited.

The Green Home Action aims to enlist support from housing estates to drive home green messages and encourage residents to adopt green living practices. The programme has been well received with more than 300 housing estates signing up. These participating housing estates will organise environmental activities for residents such as programmes for exchanging waste for gifts, the holding of green living workshops, and the setting up of green corners where information on environmental protection will be displayed. During the event, representatives of two participating housing estates, Lai Tak Tsuen and Lung Poon Court, shared their experience in organising environmental activities for residents and other green living tips.

Also launched at today's event was a roving exhibition to promote waste reduction. Through display panels, game booths and a photo-taking corner, the exhibition illustrates the 3R principles - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - in an interesting way. The ECC's Student Environmental Protection Ambassadors are also introducing the activities of World Environment Day (WED) to visitors at the exhibition. Designed by a local renowned illustrator, Postgal Workshop, the exhibition is scheduled as follows:

Date                 Venue
June 2 and 3         Plaza Hollywood, Diamond Hill
June 9 and 10        Maritime Square, Tsing Yi
June 16 and 17       Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui
June 23 and 24       Park Central, Tseung Kwan O

Artiste Ms Nancy Sit and foreign domestic helpers were also invited to participate in today's event to promote a booklet entitled "Green Living Green Cooking", which features green living tips and low-carbon cooking recipes. In addition to having English and Chinese versions, the booklet is available in the languages of Tagalog, Bahasa Indonesia and Thai for easy reference by foreign domestic helpers. The booklets will be available for collection at consulates and training centres.

The organiser also presented prizes to winners of the ECC MTR Environmental Award for Schools at today's event, and students' winning entries illustrating green living were also on display.

The United Nations has been celebrating WED on June 5 every year since 1972 to encourage worldwide efforts to protect the environment.

Founded in 1990, the ECC aims to enhance public motivation to protect the environment. It holds promotion events for WED every year and organises environmental programmes, including the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence, the Hong Kong Green School Awards and the Student Environmental Protection Ambassador Scheme. Information on WED activities is available at www.ecc.org.hk.
