LD recruits volunteers to promote occupational safety and health
**********************************************************

The Labour Department (LD) spares no effort in raising employers' and employees' awareness of occupational safety and health. This year, the department will again organise from June to September the Customer Service Teams Project to promote safety and health at work.

"The project aims at enhancing the occupational safety and health awareness of those operating and working in the workplace. This year, food and beverage services establishments; minor works contractors of repair, maintenance, alteration and addition works; and small and medium-size enterprises engaged in retail trade and real estate maintenance management will be the targets of visits by our volunteers," a spokesperson for the LD said today (June 1).

"We hope to recruit about 250 volunteers to visit some 15 000 establishments in the four-month period to promote the department's services on occupational safety and health, and relevant information will also be disseminated," the spokesperson added.

Volunteers in the project will conduct questionnaire surveys during the visits to assess the basic work safety and health knowledge of those in charge of the organisations. In addition, publicity materials on occupational safety and health as well as relevant laws will be distributed.

Members of the public aged 17 or above who have attained secondary school level are welcome to participate in the project as volunteers. The volunteers will be given one-day training on details of the project, basic safety knowledge and communication skills. Certificates will be given to the volunteers in recognition of their service upon completion of the project.

Enrolment forms and project details can be obtained from the offices of the Occupational Safety and Health Branch of the LD. They can also be downloaded from the department's website (www.labour.gov.hk).

For enquiries, please call the Safety Promotion Unit in the Occupational Safety and Health Branch of the LD on 2852 3565.

The LD has been organising this project since 1999 and volunteers have visited over 190 000 workplaces since the project's inception.
