************************************************************

In response to media enquiries on conflicts between some Hong Kong students and security guards during protests in Taiwan, the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office (Taiwan) (HKETCO) yesterday (May 16) issued the following statement:

The HKETCO has expressed concerns over the conflicts between Hong Kong students studying in Taiwan and security guards during the opening reception of the HKETCO and the launching ceremony for a new book held in a bookstore.

The HKETCO respects the freedom of speech and expression. Nevertheless, one should abide by the laws in Taiwan as well as the rules and regulations set by managers of various venues.

The HKETCO has been in touch with one of the students involved after the incident. The students were encouraged to reflect their views to the HKETCO so that the office could relay their aspirations to the Hong Kong Government.

The HKETCO will also approach students studying in Taiwan proactively to understand better their needs and concerns about Hong Kong affairs. The HKETCO will render appropriate assistance whenever feasible.
