Commemorative book on LegCo Complex (with photos)
*************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Commission has published a book to mark the opening of the new LegCo Complex.  The book, entitled "Legislative Council Then and Now: A Journey to the New Complex", presents an overview of the constitutional development of Hong Kong over the years, reviews the evolution of the Legislature since it was established in 1843 and describes in details the architectural features and facilities of the LegCo Complex.

The opening of the LegCo Complex at Tamar last October marked an important milestone for the constitutional development of Hong Kong as it is the first time the territory's Legislature has its own purpose-built building.  The commissioning of the LegCo Complex therefore provides a good opportunity for the Legislature to produce a book to commemorate this important and meaningful occasion.

The commemorative book not only provides the public with a rare insight into the role and responsibility of LegCo and its Members, but also further enhances public awareness of and participation in the work of the Legislature.  In addition, it helps promote public understanding of the design and construction of the new LegCo Complex.

The book is divided into two parts.  The first part is about the evolution of the Hong Kong Legislature since 1843, with emphasis on the composition and functions of the then LegCo; the political reform initiated in 1984 and the subsequent constitutional development; and the establishment of the LegCo of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region since the Reunification in mid-1997, with emphasis on the composition, powers and functions of the LegCo under the Basic Law.  The second part is about the history of the development of the LegCo Complex, including the tender process, public consultation on the design and planning, consultation with users, the construction process, and the introduction of the architecture, design and facilities of the new Complex.

Photographs which record the historical development of the Hong Kong Legislature and the various stages of development of the new Complex are abundantly used in the commemorative book for better illustration and for making the book more interesting to readers. The book is presented in traditional Chinese and English and has two versions: hardbound version (priced at $240) and paperback version (priced at $85).  A pane of heartwarming stamps of the LegCo Complex is also incorporated into the hardbound version of the book.

The commemorative book is now available in the LegCo Souvenir Shop on G/F of the LegCo Complex.  For enquiries, please contact the Public Information Division of the LegCo Secretariat at 3919 3601.
